Delaplane Strawberry Festival
The 18th annual Delaplane Strawberry Festival is set for May 28 and 29, 2011, in Sky Meadow State Park, 11012 Edmonds Lane, Delaplane, Virginia.
There’ll be both flats and pints of fresh, restaurant-grade strawberries for sale: snack while you walk or take them with you in the car. Local food concessionaires will be selling everything from crab cakes to bratwurst to funnel cake (don’t miss the strawberry sundaes). Tip: Food vendors do not take credit cards so bring cash.
There’ll also be music, crafts, field games, hayrides and more fun. Note that the festival goes on rain or shine, and that while it may be raining in Northern Virginia or the District of Columbia, it can be sunny and clear at the park — or vice versa.
OK, Road Trips Foodies, here’s a disclaimer from the festival for purists: “the days of finding a reliable local source for the hundreds of pounds of berries we need for our guests are over.” Yes, they buy their strawberries from commercial growers. However, just down the road apiece is Hollin Farms, and they do have u-pick strawberries in season.
The event is sponsored by Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Delaplane, which just celebrated its 150th Anniversary.
