The Battle of Wine
In the Spanish town of Haro in the Rioja region, there’s an usual festival on the Feast of San Pedro.
Every June 29, including 2015, the “Battle of Wine” takes place.
The origins of this tradition are murky, but they probably go back to a dispute with the nearby village of Miranda de Ebro over the ownership of some local crags.
This being Spain, first there is a Roman Catholic mass, and then a “peaceful battle” begins. Instead of using swords or pistols, the participants shower liters and liters of wine over their adversaries.
It is an impressive spectacle that lasts until lunchtime. Afterwards, the people head back to Haro and gather in Plaza de la Paz Square for a welcome repast.
