Corn, Beans and Squash
The Three Sisters Spring Festival begins tomorrow (March 10, 2014) and runs through March 23, 2014, at the Chickasaw Cultural Center, 867 Cooper Memorial Drive, Sulphur, Oklahoma.
Yes, Road Trips Foodies, the “three sisters” are corn, beans and squash — the triumvirate of Native American cuisine. The festival emphasizes the cultural connection to horticulture.
An ancient method of gardening, “three sisters” uses an intercropping system to grow the three simultaneously, providing for long-term soil fertility as well as healthy crops of food.
Horticulture-related activities including Pashofa and Three Sisters Stew sampling, gardening demonstrations, a play set in the garden and interactive cultural demonstrations under the arbors in the living village.
All activities in the living village and art classes are free and open to the public.
