The Gourmet Greenway
Special to Road Trips for Foodies
Walking or cycling along Ireland’s 42 km Great Western Greenway in the west of the Ireland is sure to work up an appetite.
So it is good news that The Gourmet Greenway, a food trail following the same route, now offers even more fabulous fare.
Just a year after it was set up by Mulranny Park Hotel to highlight the great food producers and food providers in the County Mayo area, the Gourmet Greenway has doubled its membership.
The balance of food producers and food providers within the expanded Gourmet Greenway food trail now offers a total experience to lovers of fine food.
The Great Western Greenway is the longest off-road walking and cycling trail in Ireland. It follows the route of the Westport to Achill railway and has been designated as a European Destination of Excellence.
People travelling along it are encouraged to visit, sample and purchase the fare of the local food producers and build this gastro experience into their visit to this popular part of Ireland.
Among the fine artisan food highlighted on the trail is Murrevagh Honey, a hand-harvested honey produced in Mulranny using nectar from Mulranny Mediterranean heather and fuchsia.
Award-winning black and white puddings and sausages are available from Kelly’s family butchers in Newport while fish lovers will delight in smoked Clare Island Atlantic Farmed Salmon, traditionally farmed Curraun Blue Trout or Achill Island turbot.
Artisan cheese, organic vegetables, fresh breads and seafood are all for sale along the Gourmet Greenway route, and a host of first class eateries along the trail offer exciting menus featuring this local produce.
