Pu‘uhonua o Honaunau Cultural Festival

Taste a bit of traditional Hawaiian food history at the Pu‘uhonua o Honaunau Cultural Festival on the Big Island of Hawaii June 24, 25 and 26, 2011. To celebrate its 50th anniversary as part of the National Park Service, Pu‘uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park has planned a cultural festival to takes visitors back to old Hawaii in the 1800’s.

Practitioners in traditional dress will provide visitors with a uniquely Hawaiian experience, honoring the culture and traditions of the Hawaiian people. There will be a ho‘okupu (offering) opening and closing ceremony, hula performances, canoe rides, food tasting, weaving, hukilau (traditional fishing), musical implements, lei making, an exploration of medicinal plants and archaeological hikes.

On the menu expect poi, spit-roasted pork and taro root pudding.

Hours each of the three days are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. — and there’s no admission fee. Sponsors are the Hawaii Natural History Association, No Hoa Aloha o ka Pu‘uhonua o Honaunau, County of Hawa‘i and Hawaii Tourism Authority.
