English Wine Week
It ends Sunday (June 5, 2011), so you don’t have much time left to hit English Wine Week. Global warming means that conditions are becoming just right for grape-growing, especially in Cornwall, Devon and Somerset. Learn about viniculture, get a taste for fine English wines and make a “grape” holiday of it — a complete schedule is online.
Three “appropriate” choices for places to stay to get the full picture are the Merlot (shown in photo, above left), Cabernet and Sauvignon cottages (sleeping 5, 4 and 3, respectively). They’re in Eastcott Vineyard near Okehampton, Devon, England. Available via Farm & Cottage Holidays, the trio is located in West Devon’s only commercial winery and vineyard. You can take a tour, learn about the winemaking process and then buy wine right from the cellar — just steps from the cottage door.
