Roanoke Strawberry Festival
If you’re wandering anywhere near Roanoke, Virginia, during the first weekend in May, consider a stop at the Community School Strawberry Festival.
It’s May 6 and 7, 2011, in Elmwood Park downtown. The festival draws some 30,000 visitors to downtown Roanoke to enjoy strawberry deliciousness (yes, there are also arts and craft vendors, children’s activities, and live entertainment).
General admission is free, but, Road Trips Foodies, you’ll definitely want to buy homemade strawberry shortcake, strawberry sundaes, chocolate-dipped strawberries, strawberry slushies, or strawberries and cream.
Parents and staff from the Community School prepare all the shortcakes from scratch, baking enough to serve over 12,000 strawberry shortcakes the weekend of the festival. They also clean, cap and slice all the berries used, as well as prepare and serve all the treats over the two days.
Hours on May 6 are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 7. All proceeds benefit Community School, an independent, non-profit institution founded in 1971.
