National S’mores Day
Who knew? National S’Mores Day is August 10, 2010! You could stage your own celebration, Road Trips Foodies, or you could make a weekend of it and head to the first-ever S’mores Weekend & Cook-Off at The Shores Resort & Spa, 2637 South Atlantic Avenue, Daytona Beach Shores, Florida.
If you were a Girl Scout, you’re quite familiar with this campfire treat. If not: think marshmallows toasted over an open fire sandwiched with a layer of chocolate between crunchy graham crackers. Although the origin of s’mores is unclear, the first recorded version of the recipe is from a Girl Scouts camping guide, published in 1927.
The celebration is packed with fun activities for families, culminating with a s’mores cook-off contest for the most creative and tastiest s’more. A portion of the proceeds from the weekend will benefit the Girl Scouts of Citrus Council, which serves six Central Florida counties and more than 16,000 girls.
The weekend kicks off with a SWAP Party on Friday (August 6) during which Girl Scouts can make new friends as they share their pin collections with each other. On Saturday (August 7), there will be a campfire sing-along. The highlight of the weekend is the S’mores Cook-Off on Sunday (August 8), where Girl Scouts, area residents and resort guests will form teams of four to compete for a panel of local celebrity judges. If you turn up unprepared, s’mores kits are available for $10.
