Copenhagen’s Gourmet Cocktails
When in Copenhagen, do as the Danish do: order a Copenhagen (that’s the drink in the picture at left). A city long known for its gourmet fare, the capital of Denmark now is making its mark as a mixologist’s dream. One place with a cocktail menu is the newly opened Nimb Bar, next to Tivoli Gardens. The bar is run by (so they claim) one of the best bartenders in the world, Angus Winchester, who arrived here after 20 years traveling the world to mix cocktails and run bars. But, Road Trips Foodies, it’s not only the bartender who’s special. The concept of gourmet cocktails means looking at cocktails as, well, culinary delicacies. At Nimb Bar you order from a three-course seasonally-inspired cocktail menu!
The past few years have seen a surge of new cocktail bars popping up all over Copenhagen, which has otherwise always been known as a beer city. Last year, it led to a competition to see which bar could create a new cocktail, to be dubbed THE Copenhagen. The winning cocktail was selected by a panel of critics and a live audience last year. Contestants were bartenders from several of Copenhagen’s top cocktail bars. Gromit Eduardsen from Bar 1105 was acclaimed winner. These days, patrons can order a Copenhagen at 1105, Bar Rouge (First Hotel Skt. Petri), D’Angleterre (Hotel D’Angleterre), Nimb Bar, UMAMI and MASH among others.
