Seven Spirits

leopold-brothers-singapore-slingMaybe it was the cocktail trend, maybe a nostalgia for moonshine, maybe a curiosity about the differences between gin, vodka and whiskey — but whatever the reason, distilled spirits are enjoying a renaissance of popularity in the United States.

Food and Wine magazine has picked seven spirits to try.

Here they are (in no particular order):
Leopold Brothers Michigan Tart Cherry Liqueur
St. George Spirits Dry Rye Gin
New York Distilling Company Rye Whiskey
Osocalis Rare Alamic Brandy
Germain-Robin Craft Method Brandy
A.D. Laws Four Grain Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Balcones Distilling Texas Single-Malt Whisky

(And, no, don’t ask your Road Trips Foodie the difference between Whiskey and whisky: she’s clueless.)

A bonus! Here’s Leopold Brothers’ recipe for a Singapore Sling (pictured, above left):
¾ oz. Leopold Bros. Michigan Tart Cherry Liqueur
2 oz. Leopold’s American Small Batch Gin
½ oz. Leopold Bros. American Orange Liqueur
½ oz. Leopold Bros. Three Pins Alpine Herbal Liqueur
2 oz. pineapple juice
¾ oz. fresh lime juice
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake until cold. Strain into a tall glass over fresh ice. Garnish with pineapple, and additional citrus fruits if desired.
