Fair Oaks Farm
That last one costs money, so this Road Trips Foodie hasn’t succumbed to the hype, but it promises a birthing barn, a “grass to glass” movie explaining exactly how milk comes into existence, and fun stuff like a “string cheese maze” and “moo choo train”. The adventure isn’t cheap: $10 for adults and $7 for children from 3-12 years old.
The gas station is self-explanatory (although it does have a cool mural on the wall facing the dairy). The restaurant provides giant glass windows to observe cheese in the making at the factory (although nothing much was going on when I was there — see photo), and everything “dairy” is featured on the menu. The gift shop sells the standard Heartland of America cheeses: Swiss, gouda, Muenster and such.
Fair Oaks itself is huge: 19,000 acres planted in silage corn and alfalfa hay to feed the more than 30,000 dairy cows on ten different sites.
[…] Road Trips Foodies who’ve cruised on I-65 in northern Indiana have no doubt seen the Holstein cow perched on a milk tanker truck alongside the highway. It’s just one of the signs for Fair Oaks Farm, 864 N 600E, Fair Oaks, Indiana — a dairy on steroids. Not only are there actual cows, but the complex includes a restaurant, cheese factory, gasoline station and Dairy Adventure Center.
