Crab Festival in Kodiak, Alaska
The Crab Festival begins at 5:15 p.m. Thursday (May 27, 2021) in Kodiak, Alaska, with the “Pardoning of the Crab”. This year’s pardoner will be Grand Marshall and City Manager, Mike Tvenge. One special King Crab will be spared so the festival is sure to run smoothly.
Everything ends next Monday (May 31, 2021) with the “Blessing of the Fleet”, starting at 1 p.m. at the “Snow Dock” (aka the Wooden Dock next to the Gazebo). The traditional blessing of the fleet is open to all vessels. A blessing service is sung followed by an Orthodox priest sprinkling each passing vessel with Holy Water. Please note that only clergy will be allowed on the dock, but spectators have a clear view from the spit.
In between are all sorts of activities including parades, a petting zoo, performances by the Kodiak Alutiiq Dancers and Chitsuwa Marimba Ensemble, an art show, a “fish toss”, and (one would expect) plenty of crab for munching.
