Second Annual Sliced Bread Day

Did you know that bread wasn’t always sold pre-sliced?
According to Wikipedia, Otto Frederick Rohwedder of Davenport, Iowa, invented the first single loaf bread-slicing machine in 1912. However, it wasn’t put into commercial use until the Chillicothe Baking Company of Chillicothe, Missouri, sold their first loaf of “Kleen Maid Sliced Bread” July 7, 1928.
That’s the event to be celebrated next month in Chillicothe at the second annual Sliced Bread Day festivities July 5, 6 and 7, 2019. Although it’s the second annual festival, this celebration will mark the first official “Missouri Sliced Bread Day” as designated by the Missouri General Assembly.
Look for a bread baking contest, farmers market, downtown parade, and fireworks.
