Farmers Market, Los Angeles, California
Special to Road Trips for Foodies
From the LA Farmers Market

An “Average Day” at the World-Famous Original Farmers Market, By the Numbers:

  • Farmers Market merchant staff members will speak at least 20 different languages.

  • Monsieur Marcel Gourmet Market will sell 100 pounds of cheese.

  • T Tea Shop will sell about 50 ounces of loose tea.

  • Several dozen hot pastrami sandwiches will delight customers at Phil’s Deli & Grill.

  • Light My Fire will sell 100 bottles of hot sauce.

In Any Given Week:

  • Huntington Meats & Sausage will sell 1,200 pounds of ground beef.

  • The Magic Nut & Candy Company will sell 500 bags of caramel corn.

  • At least 900 orders of spicy chicken will satisfy diners at Pampas Grill.

  • Magee’s Kitchen will serve more than 142 pounds of corned beef.

  • Families – moms and dads, brothers and sisters, generations of children and grandchildren – will be working side-by-side in family owned and operated Farmers Market shops: Gumbo Pot, Marconda’s Meats, Coffee Corner, Charlie’s Coffee Shop, Bryan’s Pit Barbecue, China Depot, Light My Fire, Marconda’s Puritan Poultry, Singapore’s Banana Leaf, Bennett’s Ice Cream, Magee’s Kitchen, Weiss Jewelry, Kip’s Toyland, WildFlora, Bar 326 and Sporte Fashion.

In an Average Year:

  • Bennett’s Ice Cream will wait on over 200,000 customers.

  • Littlejohn’s English Toffee House will make more than 15,000 pounds of toffee.

  • Monsieur Marcel Bistro will sell 14,400 liters of French onion soup.

Did You Know?

  • The first pizzeria in Los Angeles was Patsy’s Pizza at Farmers Market and the original brick pizza oven is still baking great pizza 69 years later.

  • The recipe for Du-par’s pancakes is stored in a safe in the restaurant.

  • The recipes for Bob’s Doughnuts are in a bank vault safe deposit box.

  • Magee’s Kitchen (although opened at another location 100 years ago last year) has been at Farmers Market for all of its “modern” 85 years; it’s the very first Market restaurant, opened late in the summer of 1934.

  • One time, a collage artist bought one of every rolled sticker at Sticker Planet.

  • A gentleman travels to Los Angeles from Germany once each year to dine at China Depot.

  • Grandparents who ate there “as kids” bring their grandchildren to Bryan’s Pit Barbecue.

  • Pampas Grill, Mr. Marcel and The French Crepe Company have all been so successful at the Farmers Market that they’ve expanded to other locations.

So, Where Are You From?

Coming to L.A? Fly into Terminal 5 at LAX and you’ll find an official mini-Farmers Market where you’ll get a sense – and a taste – of the real thing.

And when you get to Third & Fairfax, you’ll find that:

  • Locals love smoothies from The Salad Bar; visitors opt for sandwiches.

  • Phil’s Deli & Grill serves plenty of cheeseburgers to tourists; locals want pastrami.

  • At Moishe’s, out-of-towners prefer a gyro, but regular diners want falafel.

  • At The Magic Nut & Candy Company, tourists can’t resist the chocolate covered apples. Locals want pure chocolate.

  • At Pampas Grill, locals line up for the sirloin cap while visitors like the spicy chicken.

Frequented by Celebrities over the Decades:

  • Back in the ’60s, The Beatles loved their visit to Magee’s Nuts. Ringo Starr wrote a thank you note pronouncing the nut shop “fab.” All four Beatles signed the note and it remains a prized memento at the shop today.

  • Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, once visited Kip’s Toyland accompanied by an extensive security team.

  • The President of Singapore and his entire entourage dined at Singapore’s Banana Leaf; the next day, the staff came back to order takeout.

  • Teen boy to his companion as they walked past a familiar-looking Farmers Market customer buying fruits and vegetables: “Dude, that was Princess Leia!” (beloved late actress Carrie Fisher).

  • President George H.W. Bush made a campaign stop at Farmers Market in 1988 before he won the election, and in 2016, candidate Bernie Sanders stirred up excitement (and many smartphone cameras) when he paid the Market a visit.

Really?

  • At Sticker Planet, a customer once asked, “Do you have any stickers?”

  • Customers at The Magic Nut & Candy Company often ask to buy one gummy.

  • Customers whose eyes are tearing as fresh horseradish is being made at Magee’s Kitchen ask, “Is that hot?”

The Original Farmers Market has been Los Angeles’ favorite gathering place since 1934. With more than 100 grocers, retailers and restaurants—as well as year-round activities for shoppers of all ages—the Farmers Market is a beloved gathering place for locals and one of the top tourist destinations in Los Angeles.
