Cherry-Thing-A-Ling Festival

Submitted by on January 31, 2019 – 8:01 amNo Comment

Cherry-Thing-a-Lings, Batesville, IndianaThe annual treat that started a community tradition in the early 1970s is now starting a new tradition: the Cherry-Thing-A-Ling Festival.

The inaugural festival, hosted by Batesville Main Street, will take place February 15 and 16, 2019. There will be free ice skating at the Village Green on these two days as well on Friday from 5 until 9 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.

But the real reason for the fest? Customers will be able to purchase the Cherry-Thing-A-Lings from Schmidt Bakery, 125 Batesville Shopping Village, Batesville, Indiana, February 14 through February 18, 2019.

Schmidt’s says that they only make these treats the weekend of Presidents’ Day because of the folk tale that George Washington chopped down a cherry tree as a child. In 2018 the bakery sold some 119,000 of the fritter type doughnuts over Presidents’ Day weekend, surpassing their total sales from 2017 where they sold around 83,000 of the tasty treats.

According to the bakery, a Cherry Thing-a-ling is a fritter type doughnut that has cherries in it. It is “fried to perfection”, and then topped off with a cherry glaze. Most of the time they are sold still warm during our four-day weekend. If you have some that are no longer warm, just pop in the microwave to soften and make them “ooey gooey delicious”.
