Nantucket Bay Scallop Season Begins
November 1 marks the official beginning of Nantucket Bay Scallop season. As local tourism experts point out, “Nurtured by the cool waters of the Nantucket Sound and harvested from the island’s native inshore eelgrass, these prized mollusks are coveted for their mildly sweet flavor and smooth texture that many prefer to eat raw straight from the shell.”
Throughout the season, which ends in March, Nantucket Bay Scallops are featured across the island restaurants’ seafood menus. Can’t get to Nantucket? Get ’em shipped to you from the Nantucket Bay Scallop Company.
Fall may also be the best time to visit the island off Massachusett’s southern coast. The population drops from 80,000 (in summer) to 10,000. Besides, you can buy homemade Pumpkin Spice ice cream (pictured at right) at the Juice Bar only in the fall.
