“God in a Cup: the obsessive quest for the perfect coffee”

"God in a Cup" by Michaele WeissmanMichaele Weissman’s tome on specialty coffee itself seems a bit obsessive to this Road Trips Foodie.

Published in 2008 (Hoboken, New Jersey: John Wiley & Sons), the densely reported book is an in-depth look at the men and companies — the so-called “Third Wave” hotshots who competed for coffee honors in the first decade of the 21st century: Peter Giuliano of Counter Culture Coffee, Geoff Watts of Intelligentsia Coffee, and Duane Sorenson of Stumptown Coffee Roasters.

All three companies are still in business a decade later, and retail their specialty beans in the $20 per pound range. What they haven’t retained is their philanthropic mission (see “Is Direct Trade Fair?“).

Even if you pay less for your morning java, you might be interested in reading the “how to brew” instructions from Intelligentsia Coffee.
