Saffron Rose Festival in Spain
No roses are involved in the Saffron Rose Festival, set for October 27, 2017 in Consuegra, Toledo, Castile-La Mancha, Spain
The reference is to the saffron — the crimson stigmas and styles (called threads) of the Crocus sativus, which are painstakingly harvested by hand.
This event, held annually since 1963, focuses on the importance of saffron and the traditional culture of the Castile-La Mancha Region.
Highlights include the “Grinding of Peace and Love”, where a 16th-century windmill grinds wheat to make flour; a traditional La Mancha gastronomy event, and the Saffron Rose harvesting competition, where participants have to separate the saffron from the flower in the least time possible. A Folk Festival includes groups from all over the region.
