Whiting, Indiana’s Pierogi Fest

Pierogi Fest in Whiting, IndianaYour Road Trips Foodie has a confession to make: it was while attending the Pierogi Fest in Whiting, Indiana, several years ago, she discovered that pierogis can be filled with all sorts of deliciousness. Having had only those stuffed with mashed potato, it was quite a revelation to bite into apricot-filled pierogis (and more).

You, too, can discover the variety of this Eastern European treat at this year’s Pierogi Fest, set for July 28, 29 and 30, 2017, along 119th Street in Whiting. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

My favorite special event is the noon sing on Saturday with Mr. Pierogi and his Pieroguettes (Miss Potato, Miss Cheese, Miss Mushroom, Miss Berry, Miss Beef, Miss Apricot, and Miss Sauerkraut). There’s also a polka parade and a comedy cooking demo and Slovak folk dancing. The Pierogi Toss and the Pierogi Eating Contest both take place on Sunday.

All three days, dozens of booths will offer all sorts of pierogis plus other foods including kielbasa, sauerkraut, halupki and paczki

The popular event (which can draw 3/4 million foodies to the town on the Lake Michigan shore over the weekend) is sponsored by the Whiting Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce.
