National Morel Mushroom Festival
The National Morel Mushroom Festival takes place May 18 through 21, 2017. For the 57th year, it’ll be held in Boyne City, Michigan (where, it is rumored, the best morels are found in nearby woods and clearings.
Of special interest to Road Trips Foodies is the 11th annual Morelfest Wine & Dine, taking place May 19, 2017, and organized by the Boyne Area Chamber of Commerce. There are two seatings (5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.). The menu includes the ‘shrooms in each course:
- Morel Ragout Crostini – Sautéed morels, caramelized ramps, Boursin cheese, fresh thyme and a hint of sherry wine
- Soup – Morel mushroom soup, leek crème fraiche, fried parsnip chips
- Gnocchi – Mushroom gnocchi, sautéed morels, ramps, garlic cream sauce
- Pasta – Pappardelle noodles, morels, ramps, confit garlic, mushroom garlic cream
- Scallop – Pan seared scallop, sweet pea puree, morel mushroom and bacon ragout, truffle oil
Other events include seminars on finding morels, guided morel hunts, and — on May 20 — a noon to 3 p.m. “Taste of Morels” with a dozen area restaurants and chefs offering morel-infused delicacies.
