Georgia’s Vidalia Onion Festival
Road Trips Foodies in the Southeast are heading to the 40th annual Onion Festival in Vidalia, Georgia. It starts today and runs through April 30, 2017.
Look for concerts and other entertainment, onion “royalty” and a carnival plus vendors offering sweet Vidalia onions.
The fourth annual Vidalia Onion Chuckwagon Cook-Off takes place tomorrow (April 28, 2017) and Saturday (April 29, 2017) at the corner of Harris Industrial Boulevard and Airport Road in Vidalia. It’s described as an “1880’s Cowboy Cattle Drive Camp”. (Eating is scheduled to begin at noon Saturday.)
Public tastings for the Vidalia Onion cooking contest start at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Vidalia Community Center, 107 Old Airport Road. Those with strong stomachs may want to compete in the World Famous Onion Eating Contest. The competition begins at 4 p.m. inside the Arts and Crafts Show on Airport Road (if you want to compete rather than watch, get there by 3:30 p.m. to register.)
The Vidalia Sweet Onion is Georgia’s official state vegetable.
