Watermelon Festival Down Under
Yes, Road Trips Foodies, there are watermelon-eating components to the Melon Festival to be held in Chinchilla, Australia, next month. But there’s a lot more happening than chowing down.
From February 16 through 19, 2017, there are all sorts of events where watermelons are involved. Think: melon skiing, melon bungy, melon ironman, melon obstacle course, melon chariot race . . . and tours of melon farms.
Chinchilla, known as the ‘Melon Capital’ of Australia, stages the fest biennially (that’s once every two years).
Situated fewer than 190 miles from Brisbane, this small community anchors a region where coal and gas exploration and power station development projects go hand-in-hand with extensive feedlots, cotton and broad-acre farming. And, it would seem, watermelon-growing.
