Searching for Truffles in Provence
For a North American Road Trips Foodie, truffles are an exotic lure to Europe this time of year.
If you’d like to be certain you’ll actually get to taste the fungal delicacy, consider signing up for a local tour across the pond.
In Provence, France, January and February are the time for harvesting this “black diamond”. Le Comptoir Saint Hilaire, Mas de la Rouquette, Saint Hilaire de Brethmas, France, offers a weekend package filled with truffle rituals. (It’s valid now through February 27, 2017).
You can participate in the entire ritual, from harvest to plate (or just those parts that interest you) by arriving on a Friday evening. On Saturday, there’s a visit to the truffle-fields of Uzès followed by a visit to the local market.
The day concludes with a truffle dinner: truffle butter to spread; organic soft-boiled egg, bread stick, ham & truffle; sea bass and truffle-flavored mashed potatoes; filet of Rossini beef, juices flavored with truffles; a combination of cheese and truffle, finished off with chocolate biscuits, Chantilly custard, honey and Truffles, and diced exotic fruit salad.
There are more truffle tour options in the region of Languedoc-Roussillon online.
