September Means Apple Festivals

Submitted by on September 1, 2014 – 12:04 amNo Comment

applesA tasty harvest takes place across temperate zones this month, Road Trips Foodies. Yes, we’re talking about apples — and not just those half-dozen varieties you see in the grocery store.

Festivals and farmers’ markets celebrate everything from the ubiquitous Red Delicious to heirloom brands that usually taste better than they look.

Here are some of the apple fests to check out in September:

The 40th annual Johnny Appleseed Festival takes place September 20 and 21, 2014, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Yes, John Chapman passed through here, spreading apple seeds as he traveled. He traveled the countryside on foot, planting orchards in Fort Wayne and surrounding areas. In the process, he became a national folk hero and his gravesite memorial area in Fort Wayne’s Archer Park has been designated a National Historic Place. The annual fest includes plenty of apples as well as a look at the history of early 1800s America.

In Westminster, South Carolina, the South Carolina Apple Festival begins the day after Labor Day and runs through September 6, 2014.

Apples combine with art at (no surprise) the Art and Apples Festival in Rochester, Michigan, September 5, 6 and 7, 2014.

The Murphysboro Apple Festival in Murphysboro, Illinois, starts slowly September 7, with most of the events the following weekend, September 11, 12, 13 and 14, 2014.

There’s a quilt raffle at the Trimble County Apple Fest, scheduled for September 13 and 14, 2014, in Bedford, Kentucky.

The Apple Festival in Elyria, Ohio, is September 10, 20 and 21, 2014.

An Apple Fest is set for September 20, 2014, in Chicago’s Lincoln Square.

The Casey County Apple Festival in Liberty, Kentucky, celebrates its 40th year September 23 through 27, 2014.
