World’s Largest Brat Fest
What’s billed as the World’s Largest Brat Fest is set for May 23 through 26, 2014, in Madison, Wisconsin.
The sausages hit the grill in time for the 5 a.m. start of “Take Your Brat To Work Day” May 23, continuing until 9 p.m. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. May 24, 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. May 25 and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. May 26. Note that the fest set a world record of 209,376 brats sold in 2010.
It all began rather modestly. In 1983, Tom Metcalfe and his wife, Margaret, set out a table, three chairs and a Weber grill in front of their family-owned grocery on Memorial Day Weekend. They cooked up brats and sold them for 50¢.
Needless to say, the idea was so popular, that these days it’s held at Willow Island at the Alliant Energy Center, 1919 Alliant Energy Center Way, Madison, Wisconsin — and raises money for local charities.
