Vidalia Onion Festival
“Vidalia onions aren’t just the most famous onions in the world,” writes Chef Bobby Flay, “I think they may be the only famous onions in the world.”
Whether you agree or not, the folks in southeast Georgia will be celebrating their famous sweet onion during the 37th annual Onion Festival, set for April 24 through 27, 2014, in Vidalia, Georgia.
The four-day festival includes the Miss Vidalia Onion Pageant (a recent winner is sampling a Vidalia onion fresh from the field, at left), a children’s parade, outdoor music concerts, an arts and crafts festival, opening ceremonies and fireworks, car show, the Onion Run, and an onion eating contest.
As part of the fest, chefs from across Georgia will face-off on April 27, 2014, for the third annual Golden Onion professional cooking competition showcasing the Vidalia® onion, Georgia’s official state vegetable.
Grown only in the area surrounding Vidalia, Georgia, Vidalia onions are hand-planted and hand-harvested each year. The crop of sweet, juicy bulbs is available seasonally from late April to late August.
