From October 25 to 27, 2013, Consuegra, Toledo Castile-La Mancha, Spain, celebrates its annual Saffron Rose Fiesta [Fiesta de la Rosa del Azafran]. The event highlights the importance of saffron as well as the traditional culture of the Castile-La Mancha Region.
Of course, it starts with a proclamation read by “Dulcinea” and her maids of honor (consult “Man of La Mancha” if you’ve forgotten who she is).
Highlights include the “Grinding of Peace and Love”, where a 16th-century windmill grinds wheat to make flour; the traditional La Mancha gastronomy event; the Saffron Rose harvesting competition, where participants have to separate the saffron from the flower in the least time possible, and a Folk Festival with groups from all over the region.
Saffron producers in Castile-La Mancha are the stars of this fiesta, which has been held since 1963.
