Do you know that the environmental choices we made more than a century ago continue to have consequences to this day? And that the choices we make today will have consequences more than a century from now?

Food: The Nature of Eating“, an exhibit at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, 2430 North Cannon Drive, Chicago, Illinois (map), is an interactive journey that begins with an immersion into Illinois’ vast, native Prairie that once dominated the state, continues with stops at the Union Stockyard Gates and ends at present-day Chicago. Along the way, you’ll discover how food travels the world before it reaches your home and learn how millions of acres of fertile Illinois prairie were changed to farmland in less than a century by a tiny technological marvel called the plow.

“Food: The Nature of Eating” goes beyond your plate to bring you a farm-fresh perspective on how food connects us to family, friends and ultimately back to the people who produce it. The exhibit runs through September 8, 2013.
