Elkin’s Pumpkin Festival
There’s something about squash that says fall, and there are few things more autumnal than giant pumpkins.
The 15th annual Pumpkin Festival is set for September 22, 2012, in downtown Elkin, North Carolina (map).
The festivities begin in the morning with the sixth Annual Great Pumpkin Weigh-Off on Main Street near the Elkin Tribune office. There will be pumpkins from growers located all over the East Coast. Some will weigh-in at an excess of 1,000 pounds (which might be enough for placing among the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth top ten).
The Main Street of Elkin will be lined with vendors featuring everything from funnel cakes to functional pottery, canned green beans to gourmet coffees, wood furnishings to wine racks, BBQ to baked goods, sand art to sunrooms, pumpkin butter to polish sausages, plus a variety of live entertainment and the pie-eating contest sponsored by Yadkin Valley General Store.
The annual fest is sponsored by the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce, which also supplied the photo.
