Batalla del Vino
It’s the sort of battle that foodies dream about: the Battle of Wine.
Rooted in a 10th century dispute between Haro and Miranda de Ebro, two neighboring villages in La Roija region of Northern Spain, the batalla has become a fun-filled day that starts with a Roman Catholic Mass and then devolves into a competition that uses thousands of liters of Riojan wine.
After the participants are soaked to their skin, everyone shares tapas and more wine (this time, imbibing it) in Plaza de la Paz square, Haro, Spain (map).
This year’s Batalla del Vino is June 29, 2012 (a date on the religious calendar as the Feast of San Pedro/Saint Peter).
