Europe on a plate: The tastiest food festivals
From celebrations of cheeses to seafood showcases, Europe has treats galore on the menu this summer, reports Lucy Gillmore in The Independent, a publication in the United Kingdom.
She notes that food festivals range from celebrations of local produce to quirky events focusing on one, often bizarre, ingredient.
Some of her selections:
- Brusselicious is a year-long gourmet food festival featuring dozens of events across the Belgian capital.
- Watch the fastest shuckers compete in the Nordic Championship in Oyster Opening April 27 through 29, 2012, in Tanumstrad, Sweden.
- Normandy, France, celebrates its food credentials with an AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée – a geographical certification for wines, cheeses and other products) festival in Cambremer on April 28 and 29, 2012.
- The annual Cannoli Festival takes place in Piano degli Albanese, Italy, April 28 and 29, 2012.
- The Jersey Food Festival May 19 through 27, 2012, celebrates the Jersey Royal potato and other tasty offerings.
- Celebrate one of Britain’s “greatest culinary delights” at the Alresford Watercress Festival, set for May 20, 2012.
- In honor of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the Great British Food Festival takes place at Walton Hall near Warrington, England, June 4 and 5, 2012.
- Licorice (or as they say it in the United Kingdom, liquorice) is fêted at the 17th annual Liquorice Fest on July 8, 2012, in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, England.
- In England’s Eden Valley, Cumbria, the first Foodival takes place August 26, 2012.
- The Ludlow (England) Food Festival September 7 through 9, 2012, features 160 local purveyors.
- In Wales, the Abergavenny Food Festival, September 15 and 16, 2012, is so popular that vendor space is already booked solid.
- The Fête de la Gastronomie takes place September 22, 2012, with about 3,000 foodie events all across France.
- Couscous is the focal point for a foodie fest in San Vito Lo Capo, Italy, September 25 through 30, 2012.
- An Onion Festival has been held in Weimar, Germany, every year since 1653. This year, it’s October 12 through 14, 2012.
