Which Came First? The Chicken or the Egg?
The Chicken and Egg Festival is a weekend-long event at the Lions Club Fairgrounds, 455 School Street, Moulton, Alabama (map), that’s filled with food vendors, live entertainment, educational exhibits, arts and crafts, and the festival’s famous fried chicken.
This year’s dates are April 13 through 15, 2012. Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $3 for adults; children 5 and younger are admitted free.
Highlights include a chicken clucking contest, where the audience selects the winner; egg toss competition, a favorite among children; eating contests where contestants stuff their faces with chicken wings and hard boiled eggs, and the “Down on the Farm” area featuring agriculture exhibits, antique tractors, and southern folk life artists such as quilters, saddle makers, farriers, potters, blacksmith and basket and broom makers.
Other activities include a juried art show Rooster Call and Rooster Hall of Fame, an egg roulette competition, Motorcycle Chicken Run, and Little Chick Pageant.
The festival is sponsored by the Lawrence County Arts Council along with the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries, Alabama Cooperative Extension Services, Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce and the Alabama Bureau of Tourism and Travel. The state is the third largest producer of chickens in the United States (that’s more than one billion birds a year).
