Helen’s Oktoberfest

Submitted by on October 2, 2011 – 12:40 amNo Comment

It’s underway now, Road Trips Foodies, and you wouldn’t want to miss the “largest party in the Southeast”, would you?

Yes, the 41st annual Oktoberfest began September 22, 2011, in the Festhalle of Helen, Georgia, and runs through October 30, 2011. Look for authentic German bands and beers, fresh-cooked wurst, brats, German potato salad and red cabbage. You can raise your pint in the hall or outside in the biergarten.

The Bavarian party takes during “blue-sky season” in Helen. The surrounding mountains are ablaze with color, and lederhosen are the reigning fashion.

Established in 1857, Georgia’s White County is steeped in history dating back to the days of the Cherokee Native Americans and Gold Rush Days of the 1820’s. White County has two major communities, Helen and Cleveland. Cleveland, the county seat, is the home of BabyLand General® Hospital, birthplace of the Cabbage Patch Kids.

In the late 1960’s, Helen was revitalized from a remote mountain community into a replica of a quaint Alpine Village located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Helen is 15 miles off Highway 365/I-985 and located an hour and a half north of Atlanta via I-85 or GA Highway 400.
