Sultanina Celebration
Grapes get their own festival in Sitía, Greece — a town on the east coast of the island of Crete.
These aren’t just any grapes, however. They’re sultaninas — a white seedless grape also known as sultana and as Thompson seedless. They’re a variety often made into raisins, which also are called sultaninas or sultanas.
The week-long Sultanina Celebration takes place in the Lassithi Prefecture August 16 through 22, 2011. It features wine made from this grape as well as raisins. All kinds of specialty foods (often made with sultaninas) will be sold, and there’ll be lots of traditional Greek dancing.
