Pembrokeshire Fish Week

Submitted by on May 10, 2011 – 12:19 amNo Comment

According to a National Geographic survey, the “second best” coastline in the world is Pembrokshire in Wales, United Kingdom. (Specifically, it was #2 with a score of 80/100 on the list of coastlines that were top rated: in excellent shape, relatively unspoiled, and likely to remain so.”)

And, Road Trips Foodies, what better time to enjoy that coast than Pembrokshire Fish Week 2011. There are some 250 events packed into the June 25 through July 3, 2011, time frame.

Set off with your family activity pack for an adventure at Bosherston Lily Ponds, or create a masterpiece in sand at Barafundle beach in the big family sand and sculpture challenge! There are also fresh seafood lunches and crab-dressing demos at the Boathouse, and 45-minute RIB (rigid inflatable boat) trips.

Us foodies definitely would like coasteering with a foraging twist with a guide from Preseli Venture, who’ll introduce you to the many edibles along the coast. Preseli Venture also has afternoon kayaking adventures on the North Pembrokeshire coast, while TYF are combining kayaking with mackerel fishing and a fishy barbecue. You can also pull up some lobster pots and cook what you catch on a local beach with the Sea Kayak Guides.

And if you love foraging for your own wild food, there are lots of events to choose from. Join medical herbalist Lara for a ‘Really Wild Foraging’ walk, and discover how to make first aid remedies and your own seaweed skin products. Grab a bucket and bring the family to the Nevern estuary for a ‘seafood forage and risotto cook-up’ with Ed from Llys Meddyg – cook your finds on the shore or at Llys Meddyg in Newport. Gain the confidence to recognise several species of seaweeds, shellfish, and seashore plants with Jonathan from Café Mor, and cook up a mixture of Welsh favourites and Café Mor specialities.

Hungry yet? Why not join Jonathan for a family seashore picnic and forage at Freshwater West? Taste classics such as laver bread with cockles and bacon, explore the shoreline and learn about edible sea plants, seaweeds and shellfish and how to cook with them.

There are also seafood foraging workshops at Solva with Andy Davies and Café Thirty Five – forage around the harbour and beach, catch mackerel and haul lobster pots (depending on sea conditions) and learn new food preparation and cooking skills. Meanwhile, if you love walking on the coast, take a two-hour stroll around Little Haven with Discovery Walks, followed by a freshly prepared fish lunch at the St Brides Inn, walk

There are evening guided walks setting off from Abereiddi or Broad Haven beaches with Walkalongway, ending with a fresh mackerel barbecue on the beach. Bask in the paradise of Skomer Island – discover the birds, wildflowers, and history in a guided walk with Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Or relax in an early evening cruise around Skomer with Dale Sailing, returning to The Clock House in Marloes for dinner with a Mediterranean flavour.

Other boat trips include the ‘Jolly Sailor Jaunt’ – daily trips on the Cleddau Estuary in conjunction with Rudders Boat Yard, returning to the Jolly Sailor for a fish supper. There are also Cleddau river cruises with Pembrokeshire Dive Charters – stopping for lunch at the Quayside Tearoom at Lawrenny – or a wildlife boat trip from the Ferry Inn at St Dogmaels, returning for fish and chips.

Pembrokeshire Fish Week is organised by Pembrokeshire County Council. It is partly funded through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013, which is financed by the European Union and the Welsh Assembly Government.
