Culinary Tours of Charleston
Charleston, South Carolina, long has been a culinary destination. Road Trips Foodies planning a drive in the region should schedule a foodie tour during their visits.
Culinary Tours of Charleston, whose mission is to promote South Carolina local artisan growers and producers as well as helping to preserve the state’s culinary heritage, offers two distinct tours.
First is the “Savor the Flavors of Charleston Tour”. This 2½ hour culinary “walk, talk and taste” tour immerses visitors in the history and culture of the Lowcountry. You’ll discover how the cuisine has evolved over the past 300+ years while sampling specialties from local eateries, markets, bakeries, restaurants, and culinary landmarks. (Think: stone ground grits, Charleston benne wafers, Southern pralines, collard greens, barbecue and — of course — sweet tea.) This tour is offered Monday through Saturday, and includes the Farmers Market during the season.
Second is the “Charleston Chef’s Kitchen Tour”, which takes you behind the scenes with some of Charleston’s chefs and their restaurants. On this 2½ hour walking tour, you will visit several restaurants, explore their histories, learn about the chef’s approach to culinary excellence, have the menus interpreted by a pro, and tour the kitchen for a peek at what it takes to produce those fabulous meals. The Charleston Kitchen Tour begins with coffee and artisan pastries, and is offered on Fridays only.
