Bordeaux Wine Festival

Where better to sample Bordeaux wine than the Wine Festival in Bordeaux, France! The seventh fête de vin, June 24 through 27, 2010, salutes Bordeaux’s francophone twin city, Québec, with a series of special events and shows.

Tasting passes are 15€ and include 12 tasting vouchers, a glass and glass holder. They’re available at the Office de Tourisme de Bordeaux, 12 cours du XXX Juillet, Bordeaux.

“Pavilions of 80 Appellations” caught the attention of this Road Trips Foodie. Each day, beginning at 11 a.m. along the left bank quay of Bordeaux there’s a wine trail stretching nearly two kilimeters along the Garonne River between the stone bridge and the shpping exchange. Wines from Aquitaine and the major brands of trading companies will be on offer: Saint-Emilion-Fronsac-Pomerol, Médoc and Graves appellations, dry whites and rosés from Bordeaux, Bordeaux – Bordeaux supérieur, Sweet Bordeaux, the Côtes de Bordeaux….

If you’d rather visit the actual vineyards, that’s possible, too with a Vineyard pass. There are several excursions each day into the countryside of Bordeaux and the Aquitaine region (passes cost from 50 to 90€ depending on itinerary). Each includes tasting visits to three different wine estates or heritage sites and lunch. Tours leave from Bordeaux at 9 a.m. and return around 6 p.m.

But, we all know people come to Bordeaux not only for the wine, but also for the gastronomy of this southwest region of France. There’ll be three food pavilions so you can accompany your glass of wine with a tasting of the best products the Aquitaine has to offer. Think of it: foie gras from Les Landes, ham from the Basque country, oysters from the basin of Arcachon.

In addition, there are “Taste Workshops” with chef demos from 3 to 7:30 p.m. each day of the festival at Quai des Saveurs, 16 quai des Chartons, Bordeaux. The workshops take place at the AAPrA — Association Aquitaine de Promotion Agroalimentaire (Aquitaine association for the promotion of the food industry). The association’s mission is to develop the consumption of farm produce from the Aquitaine region both in France and abroad.

On June 26, everyone gathers at 6:30 p.m. on the left bank quay in Bordeaux for a “Giant Bacchus Banquet”. Really more of a picnic along the Garonne River, participants can bring their own food baskets or choose something from the gastronomy pavilions.
