Vermontville Maple Syrup Festival
Ah, Road Trips Foodies! You may have thought you’d missed all the great maple syrup festivals by now. Not so!
The 70th annual Vermontville Maple Syrup Festival, is set for April 23 to 25, 2010. (Vermontville, Michigan, is just west of Lansing.)
The syrup producers are located throughout the village selling syrup, candies, cream — and the ever-popular maple syrup cotton candy. Besides, there are pancakes with real maple syrup offered by the Maple Valley Band Boosters and the American Legion.
Here’s a recipe you’ve never thought of, courtesy of the Vermontville folks:
Maple Sauerkraut
2 lbs. fresh sauerkraut
1 small fresh cabbage, shredded fine
2 small onions, cut very fine
1 c maple syrup
Cook the sauerkraut and cabbage until fresh vegetable is tender. Sauté the onions at the same time but do not brown and add to the cooking sauerkraut mixture. Add the maple syrup and mix well. Continue to cook slowly. Baked and sliced Polish sausage can be added or served on top of the sauerkraut. Garnish with hot maple syrup.
The festival’s mentioned at Everything Maple, a blogspot tracking, well, everything maple!
