Rhubarb Celebrated in Pennsylvania
A much-maligned herbaceous perennial plant, rhubarb is right there on center stage at the annual Lancaster County Rhubarb Festival, which takes place May 21 and 22, 2010, at Kitchen Kettle Village, 3529 Old Philadelphia Pike, Intercourse, Pennsylvania. For the 27th year, follow your nose to the kettles bubbling with sweet rhubarb jam, not to mention homemade rhubarb foods including rhubarb dips, sauces, pies and drinks.
But that’s not all, Road Trips Foodies: See the fastest rhubarb cars in the world’s only rhubarb race-car derby. Savor the tastiest homemade rhubarb desserts at the Best Rhubarb Dessert in Lancaster County baking contest (those are some of last year’s winners in the photo, above left). Dance down Pepper Lane to the Rhubarb Stroll (mini parade) featuring costumed characters, musicians, pink ladies and more (that’s the picture at right). Or try your hand at the Rhubarb Whoopie Pie Filling Contest.
Even if you can’t make it to Pennsylvania in May, you still can enjoy a sip of rhubarb. Here’s a recipe from the Rhubarb Festival folks at Kitchen Kettle:
Rhubarb Ginger Peach Julep
1-10 oz. (1/2 pint jar) Kitchen Kettle Rhubarb Jam
3 oz. Kitchen Kettle Ginger Peach Jam
4 fresh mint leaves
24 oz. Sprite
Crushed ice
Combine Rhubarb Jam, Ginger Peach Jam and mint leaves in a food processor and slowly add Sprite. Pour over crushed ice and garnish with fresh mint leaves.
