Czech for a Day?
“Come be Czech for a day!” With an invitation like that, who could resist? Road Trip Foodies are programming their GPS units for the 25th annual Kolache Festival on September 12, 2009, in Caldwell, Texas.
Kolaches are a Czech fruit- or meat-filled pastries. More than 10,000 are sold at the annual one day festival that also features polka music, “hundreds” of arts and crafts booths, “lots” of food and pevo (beer) — all offering a tantalizing taste of Czech-American cultural heritage.
The Kolache Festival is a celebration of the revitalization of Czech heritage in Burleson County, a region of Texas settled by Czech immigrants many decades ago. At the Kolache Festival, visitors see the traditional arts of stenciling, basket weaving, egg decorating, quilting, woodcraft, carving and sculpturing. They can dance to the polka, and sing traditional Czech songs. And, oh yeah! eat lots of good Czech kolaches!
