Historic Orchard at Altapass
Apples never taste better than when they’re sampled within sight of the orchard! The Historic Orchard at Altapass, North Carolina, is a 101-year-old apple orchard turned Appalachian Cultural Center celebrating the people, music, art, and natural beauty of the Blue Ridge mountains. Built by the Clinchfield Railroad in 1908, the orchard sits right on the Blue Ridge Parkway. While you tap your toes to authentic mountain music, you can snack on house-made ice cream and fudge, made fresh by Miss Charlotte right in the Orchard shop. The selection of apples, of course, is amazing and includes the local favorite, Virginia Beauty — in season, of course.
Plan your drive carefully: The orchard is open May 1 through November 1. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. The orchard is closed on Tuesdays, except from September 15 through November 1.
