Dragon fruit growing in Malaysia Special to Road Trips for Foodies
From Tourism Malaysia

Thanks to our tropical climate all year ’round, we are blessed with many tropical fruits that we can enjoy at almost any time of the year. Some have seasons, but we don’t have to wait for too long to enjoy the fruits till the next one. In the meantime, we can also enjoy other fruits that are available throughout the year such as the yummy bananas, sweet pineapples, and the thirst-quenching watermelons, right here in Malaysia.

In a bid to encourage Malaysians to include more local fruits in their diet, the government had launched Kempen Makan Buah-Buahan Tempatan (Eat Local Fruits Campaign). Spearheaded by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) and Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries (MAFI), the campaign is held annually across states and levels to promote our local goods.

This year, the campaign enjoys further boost as many traders are encouraged to utilize online platforms to sell their produce. Despite the pandemic, the thirst and hunger for these local fruits do not seem to subside, in fact, some traders enjoy higher sales with the increasing demand!

In line with this campaign, we have listed two of our agro-tourism attractions where you can travel, learn and savor Malaysia’s mouth-watering fruits that are not only fresh and nutritious, but also wallet-friendly! Check out these places and satisfy your cravings.

Dragon Fruit

Dragon fruit cuisine from MalaysiaMention dragon fruit and the striking red color and scaly, thorn-like exterior would come to mind. Dragon Fruits are not only known for their attractive features, but they have also become a staple in the diet of the more health conscious among us due to their health benefits such as boosting the immune system.

Did you know that dragon fruits actually come from the climbing cactus called hylocereus? Originally from the Americas, dragon fruits thrive in tropical areas (see photo, above left).

The HL Dragon Fruit Eco Farm is one of the many dragon fruit farms that flourish in hot and sunny Sepang. The farm provides a fun and eco-educational experience that is great for kids and adults alike, and you can visit it for free. If you want to maximize your experience, you can try more hands-on activities at the farm such as planting the dragon fruit.

Dragon fruit drinks in MalaysiaWhat sets this farm apart from the rest is that on top of plucking the dragon fruits and learning about the growing process, visitors can visit its restaurant and café, which claims to be the first Dragon Fruit Themed Restaurant in Malaysia, with dragon fruit-themed cuisines and beverages. The restaurant works based on a farm-to-table concept, where the fruits are procured directly from the farm.

Of course, here you can get your fix of the dragon fruit juice, made fresh. One of the major attractions at the restaurant is the Jumbo Dragon Bun, which incorporates our local curry flavor with chicken wrapped in a dragon fruit-flavored bun. You can also opt for the dragon fruit rice, mashed potatoes with dragon fruit gravy and prawn with dragon fruit sauce. If you think dragon fruits can only be eaten raw or in its juice form, you’d be surprised with the many entrees offered at the restaurant that can change the way you consume this magnificent fruit!.

The address for the farm is Lot 7608, Jalan Besar Batu Satu, Sepang, 43900 Selangor, Malaysia. Open daily 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. except Wednesdays. Call (+6011-5357-7687) or e-mail (hldragonfruitsupply@hotmail.com) to reserve.

Durio-tourism

Durian fruit in MalaysiaThe durian craze amongst Malaysians has given rise to a new agricultural attraction known as Durio-tourism in Kuala Kangsar. Established in December 2017, it is the first Durian agro-tourism center in Malaysia. With over 1,000 trees and more than 20 clone varieties of durian in a land spanning across 21-hectares, the center aims to promote the production and consumption of local fruits in Malaysia. While the center’s primary produce are the durians, they also produce mangosteens, pomelos, and rambutans.

What’s interesting is that you can visit the center and take a tram around the orchard. Enjoy the ride while listening to the informative explanation on the king of fruits in Malaysia. If you visit when the durians are in season, you will also get the chance to savor them as part of the tour. We advise you to book in advance for visits when the fruits are in season to secure your place (and your durians). Call (+605-773 3030) or email (duriotourismkk@gmail.com) to book.

Since the implementation of Movement Control Order from March this year, MARDI Perak has steadily increased its focus on online sales package. The center has made its produce available online. Buyers can place orders and pick them up at the center. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Though the supply of durian is currently tapering due to the season, you can always get ready and gear up for the next one. Meanwhile, Malaysia has a variety of local fruits for you to enjoy. Papayas and mangoes, anyone?

The address for Durio Tourism MARDI is Kampung Talang Hulu, Kuala Kangsar, Kampung Talang Hulu, 33000 Kuala Kangsar, Perak, Malaysia.
