San Antonio’s Oyster Bake

texas_sanantonio_fiestaHere’s a foodie fest with history, Road Trips Foodies — almost a century of history in San Antonio, Texas.

The first Oyster Bake was held in 1916 on the banks of the San Antonio River when a small group of alumni of St. Mary University’s downtown campus gathered for their annual meeting and election of officers. Until the early 1940s, the only people in attendance were dues paying members of the then all-male association of former students at the university.

Fast forward almost 60 years, and the Oyster Bake became an official Fiesta San Antonio event that’s always held on the first weekend of Fiesta. This year, it’s from 5 to 11 p.m. April 11, 2014, and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. April 12, 2014, on the campus of St. Mary’s University, 1 Camino Santa Maria, San Antonio, Texas.

Sure, oysters are the stars, but there’s plenty more. Organizers expect to sell:

  • 100,000 oysters (baked, fried and raw)
  • 32,000 chicken on a stick (fried chicken breasts with jalapeño)
  • 8,500 steak on a stick
  • 7,000 egg rolls
  • 6,000 fried cheesecakes
  • 5,000 turkey legs
  • 5,000 hamburgers
  • 4,500 pork chops on a stick
  • 4,000 ears of corn
  • 4,000 slices of pizza
  • 3,500 pounds of sausage
  • 3,000 pounds of beef and chicken fajitas
  • 2,000 chocolate-covered ctrawberries
