Celebrating Onions

Submitted by on July 20, 2012 – 8:23 amNo Comment

The humble onion is the star of the Onion Market held in Weimar, Germany (map), every October. This year’s dates for the fest are October 12, 13 and 14, 2012.

This is an historic event. It was first recorded in October 1653 as a “market for beasts and onions” on what is today the Frauenplan.

Although it’s had an on-again, off-again run, beginning in 1990 the Onion Market once again became a three-day event from Friday through Sunday, always held on the weekend closest to October 2. The market has also grown in size, and now occupies the whole of the historic inner city.

Make no mistake: this fest features no ordinary onions lumped together in crates or sacks. You’ll find onions plaited together in the traditional German way and decorated with dried flowers of yellow, white or lilac. They come in all sizes too – from tiny ones to really big.

Of course there’ll be carnival games, music and other entertainment — but few visitors go home without one of the signature onion garlands!
