5th Annual Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival

Submitted by on December 28, 2011 – 12:45 amNo Comment

Mark your calendars for February 18, 2012, Road Trips Foodies — if you’re gonna be traveling anywhere near Des Moines, Iowa. That’s the date for the Fifth Annual Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival.

Tickets go on sale at noon tomorrow (December 29, 2011) and note, please, that they sold out in four minutes for the 2011 event, according to Republic of Bacon.

With plans to accommodate 4,000 bacon lovers in 2012, the event moves to the Varied Industries building at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, Des Moines (map). The larger space will also allow for more bacon purveyors, team building activities, live music, comprehensive bacon education lectures and apocalyptic survival training. (Yes, this year’s theme is the coming apocalypse, as allegedly predicted by the Mayan calendar.)

Last year attendees of the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival and Bacon Week consumed over 3,500 lbs of bacon which is approximately 60,000 strips.

Here’s how the sponsors describe the event’s genesis: “In 2001, a group of guys began celebrating bacon during an annual weekend retreat in Spirit Lake, Iowa. Six years later, they pursued a deeper understanding of their favorite meat by earning ‘All About Bacon’ diplomas from Living History Farms. On March 1, 2008, officially organized under the Iowa Bacon Board and led by Brooks Reynolds, they went on to found a festival: a festival with the mission of improving the enjoyment of all things bacon by providing education, recognition, advocacy and research on behalf of the masses, everyone, everywhere, all of them. They are serious. Seriously, dudes. Seriously.”
