Ever Been to a Cane Boil?

Submitted by on November 4, 2011 – 12:45 amNo Comment

Here’s a chance, Road Trips Foodies, to see where cane sugar comes from.

Yes, it’s boiled down from sugar cane. Well, they’re just taking it to syrup, not all the way to crystals, at the Cane Boil in Morningside Nature Center, 3540 East University Avenue, Gainesville, Florida.

The boil takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. November 26, 2011. Staff and volunteers will be cutting, pressing and boiling sugar cane juice into syrup while interpreting day-to-day life on an 1870’s Florida farm. Visitors can taste a sample of the syrup, or buy some to take home.

Traditionally, cane boils were a time for friends and neighbors to gather for work and for play. Honoring that tradition, it takes place the same day as the Longleaf Pine Youth Fiddle Contest, set for 10 a.m. to noon. A free Beginner-Level Fiddle Workshop will follow the contest at 2 p.m., and there will be live music throughout the afternoon.
