Whitianga Scallop Festival
Road Trips Foodies always remember that the seasons Down Under are the reverse of those in the Northern Hemisphere. So, the end of the New Zealand winter is the perfect time to celebrate the scallop on the North Island’s Coromandel peninsula.
The Whitianga Scallop Festival is centered on September 17, 2011, but there are other events before and after that day, including a wine/match dinner at Salt Restaurant.
Scallop-centric foods for sale at the main event starting at 10 a.m. include Scallop & Macadamia Pesto Crostini from Cathedral Cove Macadamias, deep fried battered scallops from Flippers, and poached scallops, lime, chilli, coriander with blood orange and watercress salad from Maldito Mendez.
