Best Doughnuts

Doughnuts are definitely on the fun side of bread-like foodstuffs! (Your Road Trips Foodie always says that the two basic food groups are sugar and fat: doughnuts score high on both scales!) Joshua Pramis, writing for Travel & Leisure, has come up with his list of the best doughnuts (he calls ’em donuts) in the United States. I’m adding my favorite to his list — and because I can — I’m listing my choice first. Here they are. And, as Joshua admonishes, “please, try not to drool on the screen”.

*Long’s Bakery, 1453 North Tremont Street, Indianapolis, Indiana (simply the best glazed doughnuts ever)
*Peter Pan Bakery, 727 Manhattan Avenue, Brooklyn, New York (red velvet doughnut with strawberry ice cream)
*Voodoo Doughnut, 22 S.W. 3rd Avenue, Portland, Oregon (bacon maple doughnut)
*Randy’s Donuts, 805 West Manchester Avenue, Inglewood, California (look for the 32-foot-tall doughnut on the roof)
*Spudnut Shop, 228 Williams Avenue, Richland, Washington (made from potato flour)
*Bob’s Donut & Pastry Shop, 1621 Polk Street, San Francisco (doughnuts the size of your head)
*Top Pot Doughnuts, 2124 Fifth Avenue, Seattle, Washington (from a 1920s recipe)
*Sublime Doughnuts, 535 10th Street N.W., Atlanta, Georgia (A-Town Cream, shaped like an “A”)
*Stan’s Donuts, 10948 Weyburn Avenue, Los Angeles, California (Reese’s Peanut Butter Pocket with fresh banana)
*Bomboloni, 187 Columbus Avenue, New York City (Crème Brûlée donut)
*Kane’s Donuts, 120 Lincoln Avenue, Saugus, Massachusetts (glazed doughnuts)
*Café Du Monde, 1039 Decatur Street, New Orleans, Louisiana (a beignet isn’t exactly a doughnut, but it’s close)
*Doughnut Plant, 379 Grand Street, New York City (peanut butter and jelly–filled square donut)
*Bouchon Bakery, 6528 Washington Street, Yountville, California (brioche doughnuts)
*Round Rock Donuts, 106 West Liberty, Round Rock, Texas (try ’em Texas-size)
*Dynamo Donut and Coffee, 2760 24th Street, San Francisco, California (bacon-apple-maple doughnuts)
*Coffee An’ Donut Shop, 343 Main Street, Westport, Connecticut (coconut twist doughnuts)
*Frosty’s Donut & Coffee Shop, 54 Maine Street, Brunswick, Maine (potato flour doughnuts)
*Nicola’s Donuts, 14390 North Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa, Florida (red cherry iced donuts)
*Fractured Prune, locations in five Mid-Atlantic states (mocha/oreo Morning Buzz doughnut)
*Mighty O Donuts, 2110 North 55th Street, Seattle, Washington (made with certified organic ingredients)
*Walton Donuts, 6603 Leetsdale Drive, Unit F, Denver, Colorado (tiger tails and bear claws)
*Old Fashioned Donuts, 11248 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois (super-cinnamon apple fritter)
