Georgia Peach Festival

Submitted by on May 20, 2010 – 4:27 pmNo Comment

peachbasketsWhere else would Road Trips Foodies be likely to see the world’s largest peach cobbler than during the Georgia Peach Festival! All the peachy deliciousness of the fruit will be celebrated June 11-19, 2010, in Fort Valley and Byron, Georgia.

Oh, there’s all the other stuff that comes with a community festival — 5K run, children’s activities, music and other entertainment, and a poker tournament. But the main draw is the peach.

Although it is still called the Peach State, and Georgia peaches are claimed to be “the sweetest and tastiest grown anywhere in the world”, Georgia ranks third nationally in acreage devoted to peaches (with 11,500 acres in 2006) and in production (behind California and South Carolina). Georgia’s peach industry is concentrated in Crawford, Peach, Taylor and Macon counties.

The first Georgia Peach festival was staged in Fort Valley in 1986. Officially incorporated in 1988 as the Georgia Peach Festival, Inc., the festival was once directed by the Chamber of Commerce. Today a volunteer board plans, organizes and executes the complex job of putting on the festival.

Oh, you want to replicate the cobbler? The festival has a recipe for you:

Largest Peach Cobbler
75 gallons sliced fresh Georgia peaches
150 pounds of self-rising flour
150 pounds sugar
32 gallons milk
90 pounds of butter
Divide self-rising flour, sugar and milk into six equal parts and pour into six clean trashcans. Mix thoroughly with clean boat paddle. Sizzle 90 pounds of butter in a 5 ft. x 11 ft. baking pan six inches deep. Pour in batter then add 75 gallons of sliced peaches. Bake at 350 degrees for about four hours until golden brown.

(And, if that’s, well, too big for your oven, the recipe page has one for a more manageably-sized dessert!)
