Poultry Capital of the World
Where else, Road Trips Foodies, should you visit a Spring Chicken Festival than in the Poultry Capital of the World! Where’s that? Why, Gainesville, Georgia, of course! And the Official Chicken Cookoff for the State of Georgia — by official resolution of the state legislature — takes place there from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 24, 2010. The town on the shores of Lake Lanier promises a “finger lickin’ good time” at its downtown square.
And, why did Gainesville get this nickname? From its large number of poultry processing plants! Yes, there’s even a granite monument in the town center attesting to that designation, complete with a rooster on the top. The street in front of the monument is Jesse Jewell Parkway, named after the local man who revolutionized the poultry industry by using assembly line techniques (nope: nothing’s wasted).
